I'm guessing Speedy used a heavy thumbpick like a National and supported it with a finger.
When raking down, muting the string with the third finger (if you don't use three picks) after the string just played gives the separation of the notes,

Here’s another rake lick on the C6 Buddy style. Note that in the audio description it is in the A7th position with the 5th pedal on the 7th fret.
