Thank you Carl, for all the info and experience you shared in the early years of the SGF. I learned a lot about Jerry Byrd and C6th from your posts.

There are players who have contributed mightily to the history of our instrument and those contributions can reflect many aspects beyond technical proficiency. Take Santo for instance. He could be described as a technically limited player yet try to reproduce his tone, vibrato and overall feel; it’s very difficult, perhaps impossible. Drake was another player who played “simply” yet connected emotionally with listeners. We Steelers often get so caught up in the technique and gear arms race that we forget that communicating with listeners is the true goal of playing music.
