God certainly smiled on us mere mortals when he sent Johnny Gimble down to entertain us for so many years. Like all of us, I have listened to what he played for as long as I can remember, and while I don't recall ever meeting him face to face, I feel truly blessed to get to hear what he did here on earth. RIP Mr. Gimble...

I loved Johnny playing with Chet Atkins. A very sad day for all of Johnny's fans. He will be missed beyond words.

So Sad, Such a great loss

So Sad, Such a great loss...
I was just listening to a recording with him on it a couple of days ago.
It's a Ray Price and Willie Nelson album from about twenty years ago.
First time I heard that version of Faded Love, his fiddle solo just about caused me to swallow my gum.
What a great person God sent us.

As Johnny said when he heard Keith Coleman passed away, “All the fiddle players just moved up a notch”. Johnny was an inspiration as a musician and a person. I’ll keep trying to learn his licks for as long as I play, and I’m sure I won’t be alone in that pursuit. RIP Johnny. You made so many people happy with your music and that’s about the best thing a person can do.

Johnny always amazed me with his playing. It's comforting to know that he never needed a loud distortion box, or a bunch of pedals and gimmicks to get that great sound out of his fiddle. He had the "family touch" that didn't require assistance from "toys". RIP.

Reece once shared with me some advice which Johnny had given him regarding 'over-playing'. He said:

"If someone plays too much....next thing they know, they won't be getting to play too much."

Very true words that always ring out in my head...

Sad to hear this.

I only met Johnny once, while I was attempting to learn to play the fiddle in Austin. He had dropped by my instructor's house who was a fellow fiddler and friend. Johnny picked up that $100 fiddle and $125 bow I had and made it sound like a million dollars.

It was quite an experience for me to meet and talk with a living legend who was such a nice person.

I'm going to miss him and his music.

I never did learn to play that damned instrument.

Thank you Johnny for a wonderful evening.

He was a giant in the music world. How lucky for all of us his style of music didn't stay out of fashion very long. He was too talented to let that happen.

Someone told me that on a gig, the player--maybe a guitarist--had played a solo, or attempted to and Johnny quipped: "man, I really like what you're trying to do."

If Stevie Ray Vaughan and Willie Nelson have statues here, surely Johnny Gimble deserves one.

Maurice once told me in passing that Johnny was the best musician that he had ever come across. Praise indeed. RIP Johnny.

David - that is a wonderful photo. I met Reece's mother on many, many occasions, but this is the first time I have ever seen a photo of his dad in middle age. He was a handsome guy.

Johnny Gimble

Thank you Herb for letting us know. We lost Al Bruno yesterday morning then I found out from u just a moment ago about Johnny. Wow. Johnny was on 4 of my records I did back in 78, Phil Baugh produced them then he passed before we finished the album. I am 80 now and some of the bad reasons of living so long is we lose so many people we loved

He was the only musician I ever heard that could make me actually laugh out loud. His playing was so joyful. He would raise my mood no matter how I felt or what he was playing. Just an amazingly masterful musician.

I will miss him very much. May his family find peace and comfort in his wonderful musical legacy.
Best regards,
Mike
