Sorry guys, you were right and the online sources are wrong - It was John Hughey !
Here's what Lloyd wrote me on that issue
"Alexander, Well….it isn’t me! That’s John. John Hughey playing steel on “The Lord Knows I’m Drinkin’”.I hope this issue is settled forever. Actually my session book shows no sessions with Cal in 1972 the year this record was a #1 hit.But I recorded several times with him the following year, 1973."
Thanks for going to the source and clearing that up Alexander.
Now, wow, the Dickie Betts album is wonderful. It's not so often you can hear pedal steel in a free-wheelin open-jam context such as this one. Great stuff.
Now, Richard, you promised "more JH that I can stand", and I'm not anywhere close to that yet...
Carter D10 8p/7k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup, Regal RD40 Dobro (D tuning), Recording King Professional Dobro (G tuning), NV400, NV112, Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open G slide and regular G tuning guitar) .
i'm checking out the dickie betts album right now, it's great.
Another album I like is from 1968 with John and the boys standing beside there bus. Conway's singing mostly cover tunes on the album and John was all over it. Classic great steel pickin' by JH.
i think this album is called "here's conway twitty and his lonely blue boys".
Pretty sure these are John. Hal Rugg, Lloyd Green, Pete Drake and Dickey Overbey are also listed on the album. These cuts have Hughey written all over them. If not him, maybe Overbey. I have heard Dickie come close to sounding like John.
If anyone knows differently, I would love to know.
