Earl was one of the greats. Got to meet him once, briefly. I bet he's up there pickin in the great beyond with Lester once again and the original Foggy Mountain Boys. RIP Earl.

I think Curly Sechler(sp)is the only Foggy Mountain Boy still living if he hasn't passed.

Of the first generation of bluegrass "stars", I believe only Mac Wiseman and Ralph Stanley are still with us.

God bless Curly Seckler if he's still living.

Mr. Monroe, Don Reno, Red Smiley, Jimmy Martin, Lester and Earl, Carter Stanley, Clyde Moody, Hylo Brown, so many great sidemen... all gone.

I was a bluegrasser for about 6 or 7 years and was really into it, and I still have all my vinyl.

Hi Herb, yes Curly Seckler is still with us. He was on a "Song of the Mountains" program on PBS this past year. Speaking of Clyde Moody, I played in a house band in Raleigh back in the 70's and Clyde would be our featured performer one night a week. I got to know him quite well. He appreciated that I tried to play his stuff like Jerry Byrd on his King recordings. In his heyday, he played movie theaters and had a good player by the name of Chris Dayton. I often wondered what became of Chris. (Did I ramble enough?)

Earl played guitar on some of his numbers, and also mandolin from time to time. Does anyone know whether he played Dobro ?

I have Scruggs "how to" book with CD and a decent banjo, but I never found the time to learn his innovative playing style.

Now it's too late, arthritis has taken conrol of my right thumb and ended my steel playing and any new endeavor such as banjo playing.

Earl Scruggs is the reason I started playing 5-string banjo back in 1975.

Just reminding everybody that Earl Scruggs Funeral Service will take place at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN at 2:00 PM tomorrow – Sunday April 1. I would suggest getting there early – the Ryman only seats 2,362 people.

Here is an interview with Curly Seckler conducted by Kyle Cantrell 12/4/10 in the Ford Theater at the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Yes I remember listening to Earl Scruggs and Lester Flatt may years ago back in the mid forty's.Rest in peace Earl and keep the great music going in heaven for us when we meet there.

Here are photos posted in the Nashville Tennessean from Earl Scruggs's Funeral Service yesterday at the Ryman Auditorium:

At the end of the service - they carried Earl's coffin up the center aisle of the Ryman and 25 of the best banjo player's in the world held up their banjos as Earl passed on by.
